Thomson-inspired sweeping terrace to 'fill the gap' at Nithsdale Drive

Arnold Clark has opened a consultation to transform a former garage at 134 Nithsdale Drive, Glasgow, into a mix of 106 apartments for general sale.

An island site overlooking Strathbungo Junction will be redeveloped by the car dealership and a future development partner to 'fill the gap' in the streetscape, including 100% parking provision.

In a consultation statement, Page\Park architects wrote: "The design seeks to sympathetically 'fill the gap' and place a continuous terrace along Nithsdale Drive, complementing the scale and aspirations of surrounding buildings with particular reference to local heritage."

Drawing inspiration from Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's A-listed Moray Place opposite the build will establish a continuous terrace along Nithsdale Drive backing onto a series of courtyard squares and gardens overlooking the railway line. The terrace would terminate with a cylindrical 'turret' sweeping round to Nithsdale Road.

The online consultation will run until 6 May with a formal planning application to follow shortly thereafter. Arnold Clark vacated Nithsdale Road in 2015 in favour of a new headquarters at Hillington

Car dealership + 100% parking provision = discount on second hand cars for new owners

I've commented in the local Strathbungo Society website as IMO this looks like the kind of new-build project that Glasgow desperately needs more of (instead of the production line mono-type blocks that have blighted the city scape). I've said,"Looks promising? Excellent architectural practice in the form of Page & Park, and a 'progressive' client (Arnold Clark, among other things, was a long term benefactor of the Glasgow Citizens Theatre), and the prospect of the Alexander Greek Thomson style influence couldn't be more appropriate for the Glasgow south side."

I'm not sure I can see the greek thomson influence is the images in the article. Looks interesting development all the same.

It's refreshing to see something that isn't a box for once.

Contempory architects have been trying sell the lie that Glasgow is all hard edges when Greek Thomson's building here demonstrates that was hardly the case.

In what context, and by what tangible measure is this 'impressive'?

This post should be reactivated now that the planning application has been submitted. A horrendous value engineered, overdeveloped, brick edifice with no street buffer
